Increase one’s knowledge and understanding of a variety of issues related to alcohol, other drugs and gambling. Topic areas include: - Substance Use 101 - Alcohol: Staying Within the Guidelines - DWI - Driving While Impaired - Keeping your Parties Safe - Illegal Drugs & Zero Tolerance - Prescription & Over-the-Counter Medication - An Introduction to Gambling and Problem Gambling - Talking About Alcohol and Other Drugs - Supervisor’s Training Part One: Recognizing and Responding to Early Warning Signs - Supervisor’s Training Part Two: Developing Effective Interview Skills - Understanding and Changing the Culture of an Organization - Alternatives to Alcohol and Other Drug Use Desired Learning Outcome: Alcohol, Other Drugs, Gambling and Gaming Awareness is based on an interactive adult learning approach and provides information on alcohol, other drugs and gambling. Learn to recognize the signs and symptoms of addiction, to apply the DND policies around alcohol, other drugs and gambling and understand and develop strategies to promote an addiction-free work environment. This one-day training helps supervisors improve risk management in children’s programs by learning how to measure quality with the HIGH FIVE® scientifically validated QUEST 2 Tool. Supervisors will use the QUEST 2 Tool and learn how to enter their data into the HIGH FIVE® Database to track their progress as well as identify areas of need. They will also learn how to debrief the results of the assessments with staff in a positive way. IRS aims to provide scientific based evidence about injuries in the CAF at both a National and Local level. This workshop is facilitated, in partnership with local Subject Matter Experts, in the field of Health Promotion, Physiotherapy and Fitness. Discover why more people may be risking injury when they are exercising and learn a few simple strategies you can implement to help prevent injuries and increase motivation and confidence. Desired Learning Outcome: Participants will learn the most prevalent causes of injuries within the CAF and how to apply a variety of injury-reducing strategies for both their personal fitness and Unit PT. National Lifeguard training develops a sound understanding of lifeguarding principles, good judgment, and a mature and responsible attitude towards the lifeguard's role. National Lifeguard training emphasizes prevention and effective rescue response in emergencies including first aid treatment. Candidates develop teamwork, leadership and communication skills. Fitness requirements include a timed object recovery, 50 m sprint challenge, 50 m rescue drill and 400 m endurance challenge. Recertification: National Lifeguard certification is current for two years and is recertified by completing a National Lifeguard recertification exam. The recertification may require 6 - 8 hours depending on the number of candidates. Desired Learning Outcome: Drowning prevention. TFTP offers participants an opportunity to determine their personal energy requirement and learn new tips on how to maximize their overall physical performance. This interactive workshop includes education on Everyday Eating, Fueling for Training and Recovery, Nutrient Timing and Hydration Before, During & After Physical Activity, Body Composition and Weight Issues and Sports Supplements. Desired Learning Outcome: Choose the amount and type of fluid and food needed to balance energy requirements in varied situations and to optimize health and physical performance. The Water Safety Instructor course focuses on planning and teaching the Red Cross Swim continuum, instructional emergency response skills and instructional techniques specific to our programs. Recertification: Attend a recertification workshop every two years. Desired Learning Outcome: The certification issued allows candidates to teach all the Red Cross Swim programs. Delivery type: Classroom Time commitment: 25 Hours (+ 9-11 hours teaching experience) Prerequisites: 15 years or older, certified as Red Cross Assistant Water Safety Instructors Course required for: Lifeguards/Instructors Weight Wellness Lifestyle Program (WWLP) The WWLP is based on Canada’s Food Guide and does not include gimmicks and false promises around weight loss. It is designed to give participants the opportunity to learn realistic ways to lose weight and keep it off. Participants will learn to adjust portion sizes, understand and interpret nutrition labels and restaurant menus, along with developing a physical activity plan to boost their metabolism. Participants will get the lowdown on healthy meal planning and snacks and how to manage hunger and food cravings. We are especially lucky here at Garrison Kingston to be able to offer the WWLP in partnership with Fitness Staff who lead a weekly physical activity session. A grocery store tour and a healthy cooking class are included.
